Can Chiropractors Help Disc Injuries?

Is it safe to see the Chiropractor for a herniated or bulging disc problem? We hear this question often, and the answer is, drumroll…usually. Everybody prefers a yes or no answer, but the reality is that it depends on very specific things, like the size, shape, direction of the herniation and the severity of the symptoms. If a herniation is causing a person to lose bowel or bladder control or they lose the ability to move any of the major limbs of the body, there isn’t time to treat it conservatively, and emergency surgery is required. Most disc cases deal with pain, tingling, or numbness in parts of one limb and a thorough examination can better predict the chances of success through conservative care.

At Creekside Chiropractic, we have helped rehabilitate numerous disc problems ranging from simple bulges to severe herniations (FYI, a “slipped” disc is not a real condition, it is a generic term used to describe a suspected disc problem when the doctor doesn’t have enough information to completely understand the condition. Please, never be satisfied with a slipped disc as your diagnosis.) Don’t just take our word for it. Below is a citation on a study that evaluated fifty patients who had evidence of a disc herniation from an MRI study and radiating symptoms into one of the limbs that corresponded with nerve pressure from the disc level. These patients were only treated with Chiropractic adjustments and a statistically significant number of them were substantially better when re-tested at three months.
